Breast reduction, also known as reduction Mammoplasty surgery, is an operation to remove the weight and volume of the breast.
It is becoming increasingly popular with both men and women whether for cosmetic reasons alone or simply with a view to reducing discomfort. The procedure consists of fat, glandular tissue and skin being removed from the breasts.
The breast is then reshaped and the nipple repositioned. As it involves the removal and repositioning of the nipples, scarring is inevitable and the extent of the scarring will depend on the individual case, your surgeon should have explained the implications to you in detail. It can create an anchor-shaped scar, a vertical scar from the nipple downwards and a horizontal scar in the crease below the breast.
The risks of this procedure can include;
- Scarring/abnormal scarring
- Asymmetry/Synmastia (uneven breasts/nipples)
- Altered/loss of nipple and areolae sensation
- Breast lumpiness
- Bleeding or Haematoma
- Problems breast feeding
With all cosmetic surgery procedures there are risks. However, these risks should be managed and minimised. If problems arise because of poor management of these risks, individuals may have grounds to claim for compensation.
