Nose reshaping surgery, also known as Rhinoplasty or a ‘nose job’, is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures performed across the world, and as well as being requested for cosmetic reasons, it can also be used to correct breathing issues and to help alleviate the symptoms of sleep apnoea
There were over 4,000 of these procedures carried out in the UK in 2012, ranging from reducing or enlarging the nose to changing the size of the nostrils, bridge or tip of the nose.
A nose reduction involves the bone or cartilage being altered or removed to change the shape of the nose. The skin around the nose then shrinks to fit the new shape. Nostrils can also be reduced in size, by making a small incision between the nostrils.
Augmentation Rhinoplasty involves increasing and re-shaping the nose. This procedure involves the surgeon making incisions in between the nostrils or inside the nose and re-shaping the bone or cartilage. Bone or cartilage can be removed from another area of the body to add to the nose.
The risks for nose reshaping surgery include;
- Abnormal bleeding or clots
- Eye injury
- Decreased sense of smell
- A retracted or hanging calumella
- Scarring/abnormal scarring
